2020 Artistic Directors' Report

A year quite unlike any other

2020 was set to be a fantastic year for Mudlark. After a huge effort from the company over numerous years we were able to re-secure 12 month organisational funding, giving us the security to deliver a full season of work. We welcomed our first ever General Manger to the company in the incredible Kimberley Pease from ProjecKt Pty Ltd.

We were excited to be able to creatively develop and produce a new Tasmanian play by the much loved writer of our 2008 mainstage show Cross, Stephanie Briarwood. The Play Caravan Boat Treehouse was workshopped, cast, rehearsed, skilfully directed, set built and show teched only to have the Prime Minister come on to our televisions on the Friday before we opened announcing a very new concept to us all, gathering restrictions.

Mudlark made the difficult, but only responsible decision, to postpone the production on the day of the company’s tech run; though we saw the show through to completion, filming the play with the original company.

2020 saw the seeding of our Full Moon Writers Room, which we hope to grow next year; aiming to have not one but now two full readings of new Tasmanian works in 2021.

We ventured into the park as a part of the Junction Arts Festival - Hometown event, with the aptly titled One Day In The Park. We were proud to have created 4 new, festival specific, short Tasmanian Works in 24 hours.

As all things in 2020 somethings had to move, some were lost and ultimately all things were changed. In a marriage of two of our scheduled offerings in 2020 we are excited to announce that our first project for 2021 is a ground up remake of Caravan Boat Treehouse with a new cast and creative team, which will tour to Burnie and play in Launceston.  We truly thank the company of the original production, and are thrilled that audiences will get to share the beautiful words Steph has written.

Please keep an Eye out for the announcement of our 2021 mainstage new Tasmanian work, trust us when we say it is going to be a doozy.

A huge THANK YOU to those who supported us throughout the year, especially Arts Tasmania for their continued belief in the North. W.D Booth Charitable Trust for their support throughout the development of Caravan, and our sponsor Hotel Grand Chancellor - Launceston. Above all I would like to acknowledge our tireless board for their unwavering support of the company. The people behind the scenes are the lifeblood of any organisation I thank them for their support as we have navigated this year.  A year quite unlike any other.

We welcome the Minister's announcement this week that our venues will be returning to 75 percent capacity and we look forward to seeing you all in the theatre in 2021.

Thanks to you all,
Cheyne Mitchell
Artistic Director
