On one strange day,
at a café where there are only tables for one,
two strangers
talk...
“While
depression and suicide remain taboo topics for many, Mudlark is to be
commended
for taking the initiative and providing a platform on which to begin
the
conversation. As
long as Mudlark
continues having worthwhile things to say, you’d be well advised to
listen.”
Chris Rattray, SAUCE, 30 May 2007
Directed
by Jane Johnson, CAFÉ is a part of
Mudlark Theatre’s Education Season for 2007. CAFÉ is an original, new
work by Carrie McLean for three characters, a guitar, a film screen,
and many cups of coffee. The play explores the issues of depression and
suicide by delving into the stories of two customers sitting on the
edge of life and sipping coffee in a slightly surreal café. As their
stories unfold - live, on screen and in song - the audience is taken on
an emotional journey, at times heartwrenching, and at other times
humorous.
In addition to the issues of
depression and suicide,
CAFÉ delves into the themes of loss and grief, sex and relationships,
and life choices. Although these subject matters are serious, CAFÉ
deals with them in a very compelling and entertaining way. Live music
and video footage particularly appeal to young people and the entire
play has an underlying quirky absurdity that draws the audience in.
A
Public Showing of this original work will be held on TUESDAY MAY 1ST at
the Annexe Theatre, School of Visual & Performing Arts,
Inveresk at
1pm and 7pm.
