Work in Development

To be able to bring audiences a premiere performance of a new work, Mudlark works with artists throughout the year to develop new plays, collaborations and concepts. Here are some of the exciting projects we are currently working on:

Road Works

MUDLARK THEATRE presents ROAD WORKS
Road Works is a series of bespoke play readings featuring theatre works by acclaimed Australian playwrights: Mary Stuart by Kate Mulvany, On This Island, Now by Melanie Tait and Red Sky Morning by Tom Holloway.
Featuring an ensemble of Tasmania’s finest emerging and established artists, the project unites artists from across the State for neat week-long engagements to rehearse and tour the playreadings to theatres in Hobart, Launceston, Burnie and Devonport. Road Works is the perfect winter theatre program, connecting audiences and artists across Lutruwita through relaxed and engaging evenings at the theatre, showcasing readings of powerhouse plays, and sparking rich conversations around creativity and the theatre-going experience.
Road Works is supported by the Tasmanian Performing Arts Centres Strategic Touring Fund and will engage over 20 artists across the three seasons; a vital investment in Tasmanian artists at a time when there is a critical lack of employment and inter-region collaboration. The project is curated by Jane Johnson, Jane Longhurst and Gabrielle Adkins and produced by Mudlark Theatre.

Ticketing Information to be provided soon...

MARY STUART
a new adaptation by Kate Mulvany, after Friedrich Schiller.
Play Synopsis:
Two queens. One Crown. A battle of wits, blood, and broken hearts.
This is the iconic tale of Elizabeth I and Mary Stuart; two flawed and fascinating women locked in a monumental, murderous feud. The stakes couldn’t be higher. And both are determined to survive.  Kate Mulvany’s masterful adaptation brings a compelling female perspective and wit to a world dominated by politics, betrayal, and double-crossing men.
Featuring a cast of nine of Lutruwita’s finest emerging and established artists, Mary Stuart is simply epic storytelling. Content Advice: Strong language, mature themes including sexual violence.
Performances:
- Sunday 13 July: The Studio Theatre, Theatre Royal (Hobart)
- Tuesday 15 July: paranaple Arts Centre (Devonport)
- Wednesday 16 July: The Princess Theatre (Launceston)

ON THIS ISLAND NOW
by Melanie Tait.
Play Synopsis:
Christmas Day. One family. A whole lot of history. And tinsel.
It’s Christmas morning on Bruny Island, and Cara is desperate for it to be a perfect day.  Cara’s about to have a baby and she wants this baby to have a family.
After a year and a half in Sydney, her sister Isla is returning home sober and she wants her to stay that way. Cara's other sister Skye is recovering from a car accident, and for the first time in her life not knowing what her future holds. Their mother Jan has decided to let the house out to tourists on Airbnb, so it's going to be the last Christmas they have on this place they've called home for decades.
They’ll have lunch and head back on the evening ferry to the big island.  Only, they won’t be on that ferry. Isla isn’t coming home alone. And Christmas is about to get complicated.
ROAD WORKS is the premiere presentation of the heartwarming new Australian play On This Island, Now by Melanie Tait; a crackingly funny and honest tale of one family just trying to make it through Christmas day and life, together.
Content Advice: Occasional strong language, mature themes.
Performances:
- Wednesday 23 July: Burnie Arts Centre (Burnie)
- Thursday 24 July: The Princess Theatre (Launceston)
- Friday 25 July: The Studio Theatre, Theatre Royal (Hobart)

RED SKY MORNING
by Tom Holloway.
Play Synopsis: Three family members, three monologues, one day, and a heartbreaking tragedy of miscommunication.  A woman. A man. A girl. Over the course of a single day these three voices from one family intertwine to tell a story of isolation in regional Australia. Moments missed, dreams not shared and the tragedy of the everyday course through this powerful and redemptive tale about the need to connect.
Red Sky Morning is a powerful example of what theatre does best, the telling of stories from heart to heart and mind to mind.
Content Advice: Strong language, mature themes including mental health, suicidal ideation, addiction, references to violence.
Performances:
- Tuesday 19 August: The Studio Theatre, Theatre Royal (Hobart)
- Wednesday 20 August: The Princess Theatre (Launceston)
- Thursday 21 August: Burnie Arts Centre (Burnie)
- Friday 22 August: paranaple Arts Centre (Devonport)
