UNDERNEATH THE LINTEL
BY GLEN BERGER
AUGUST 2007 |ST AIDAN'S CHURCH HALL, LAUNCESTON
AUGUST 2007 |LITTLE THEATRE, DELORAINE
Original Launceston season was co-produced by Three River Theatre and Centr Stage in March 2004, with pretty much the same creative team.
"We're here because we're here because we're here because we're...here..."
This intriguing and madly literate one-man-show features a librarian, who gets the shock of his life when a book is returned 113 years overdue - and in the overnight slot no less. The ensuing quest for the immortal culprit sees the meek Librarian turn into international sleuth, taking in musty museums in Bonn, swing dancing in New York, exploring Aztec temples, and attics in Brisbane, as well as suffering through several repeat viewings of Les Miserables. Along the way, the Librarian is hot on the heels of one of history’s most enigmatic myths, and in the process, discovers nothing less than the Meaning of Life.
“One-person plays are difficult to stage successfully because they depend on the virtuosity of one actor, who must obey T. S. Eliot's dictum - 1: Hold the audience's attention; 2: Don't lose it; 3: Repeat 1 and 2. Stan Gottschalk holds our attention masterfully in this 1 ¼ hour New York play, skilfully directed by Stuart Loone, which starts when a librarian discovers a book has been returned after 113 years… such an amazing journey, in time, in space and in a sense beyond both, that this play assumes the form of an epic… Gottschalk transforms an obscure librarian into an epic hero whose journey leads us towards our own best dreams and highest ideals… compare this play with Mel Gibson's film The Passion Of The Christ, and the play will not suffer by the comparison. Humorous, mysterious and never dull, this is a journey of the soul with the power to transform.” - Clem Gorman, The Examiner (original 2004 season)
“Stan Gottschalk engages us in an enthralling personal conversation. As director, Stuart Loone has made sure that humour, tension and pathos are equally blended. There is a great sense of intimacy to the production and the audience often has to stifle itself from engaging in a dialogue with the librarian. This is one of delights of this play and this production.” - Jeff Hayes, The Examiner
