THE FLOWERING
BY DONNA CAMERON
- A Blue Moon Theatre production, presented by Mudlark -
APRIL 2008 | EARL ARTS CENTRE, LAUNCESTON
The Flowering takes the audience from raucous laughter through harrowing silence to tears of joyful recognition as it follows the story of Chloe as she returns home to find her mother drinking herself to death.
To save her from her course of destruction Chloe begins to relate the story she has always kept from her - what happened during her disappearance at 18 years of age. In so doing she unearths the fact that the history, dreams and conditioning of the mother are inseparable from the daughter, as inseparable as life and death.
Created by a team of award-winning artists, all recognized in their own right for creative excellence, it is an innovative piece of theatre that enriches traditional practices by boldly taking ceramics and performance into new artistic fields. During the critically-acclaimed play, Cameron performs with and in a magnificent porcelain installation created by multi-award winning ceramic artist Julie Shepherd.
The Flowering was first produced by The Blue Moon Theatre in March 2004 in an out of town season at Cleveland, Donna’s place of residence, before moving to the Metro Arts Theatre (Edward St, Brisbane) in May, where it received a three week season as part of Metro Arts’ Independent Season in 2004 to critical acclaim.
“The Flowering is a thoughtful and moving production. It contains deep themes in the psychological and mythic realms. Donna Cameron’s performance is gripping…” – The Courier Mail (Brisbane)
“At times the characters vie for the audience’s attention, and the actor Donna Cameron becomes medium to these characters – a challenging and tiring task almost beyond the realm of acting. Cameron’s grasp of characterisation is superb and untiring, exhibiting her acting talent and Sue Rider’s directorial skill.” – Scene Magazine
